Do remember that re-thatching a listed property or property in a conservation area in a different style or thatching material will usually require listed building consent. If the present thatch on a property is discovered or suspected of being altered without seeking the necessary consent it is important to ensure the local planning authority is happy with the change.
Otherwise they can insist on reinstatement of the original material (at great expense to you!) or a criminal prosecution of those involved. Don’t assume that insurance is necessarily expensive, in most cases it isn’t. If you choose the right insurer, with a track record of insuring thatched properties, then you stand a very good chance of getting a very competitive cost.
