It is well known that if you ask 10 different people their opinion you will get 10 different responses, particularly when it comes to questions such as ‘what are you favourite…’. But when it comes to the beautiful city of Bath it is difficult to argue about the top 10 things you should do if you visit for the day.
Of course living somewhere, rather than just visiting, puts a totally different perspective on what you would choose to do, and it’s certainly a consideration one should think about when mulling over relocating. But I think you would be hard pushed to better the top 10 things to do in Bath on the list we have put together – which are in no particular order to stop any disagreements about what should be number one!
Here are the top five:
Visit the Roman Baths
Built around 70 AD, the city’s Roman Baths were constructed in the heart of bath and used for socialising and bathing and are now considered the best preserved Roman remains in the world. Bath itself was founded upon natural hot springs and the water has played a key part in the history of the city so it’s easy to understand why they are such a huge draw and attraction to visitors and residents alike.
Visit the Jane Austen Centre
It is difficult to argue with the fact that Jane Austen is Bath’s most famous resident and the city references her in so many ways, not least through a purpose-built centre. It offers a snapshot of what it would have been like to have lived during her time and what in turn helped inspire her novels.
Not only can you dress up in period costumes, but also get a sense of the food, fashion and what it would have been like to live in Jane’s day by visiting the themed café and other exhibits throughout the centre.
Visit one of the Festivals
The casual visitor or permanent resident of Bath is spoilt for choice when it comes to the volume and variety of festivals that the city holds. Whether it is comedy entertainment featuring household names or those for the future, doing stand-up, sketch or cabaret; or music and performance arts when the city comes alive to the sounds of jazz, folk, rock or classical – the choices really are endless.
Visit the Fashion Museum
Did you know that this museum is rated as one of the world’s top 10 for fashionable dress? Well it is and for that reason alone it’s a must-see! There is so much to see from historic Georgian gowns to cutting-edge fashions by some of today’s leading designers.
The Fashion Museum tells the story of dress over the past 400 years and features more than 160 figures in costume. You can even get into the whole dressing-up thing yourself if you want with a dressing-up room for everyone where you can try on coats, hats, corsets, dresses and bonnets and even have your photo taken against a Victorian backdrop.
Visit the Racecourse
Thanks to the multi-million pound redevelopment in 2016 Bath racecourse has become one of the most stylish racecourses in the UK. It boasts stunning views across the city and offers a thrilling day out and exceptional hospitality and fine dining. There’s something for everyone with racing hosted throughout the summer with music evening combined along with Ladies and Family race days.
It’s these views that make Bath such a beautiful city to visit and of course live in or near. Anyone relocating to Bath can easily understand why it has such a draw and attracts the amount of tourists and residents alike.
